Cracked Laptop or MacBook Screen: A Repair Guide
MacBook, Surface, and Windows laptop screens crack differently. Here is what repair involves and what it costs.

Short answer: a cracked laptop screen is almost always repairable, and replacing the display is far cheaper than replacing the laptop. What it costs and how it is done depends a lot on whether you have a MacBook, a Microsoft Surface, or a standard Windows laptop — they are built differently, and that changes the repair. Here is what to expect.
First, how bad is the damage?
Not every screen problem is the same. A single hairline crack with a clear picture is the simplest case. Spreading cracks, black patches, bright or dead spots, colored lines, or leaking "ink" marks mean the LCD panel underneath is damaged and needs replacing, not just the glass. And if the picture is perfect but the touch layer is shattered on a touchscreen laptop, that is a different part again. Knowing which one you have is the first step to a real quote.
Windows laptops: usually the most affordable
Most everyday Windows laptops use a replaceable LCD or LED panel that is separate from the glass and the lid. That modular design is good news — the panel comes out and a new one goes in without rebuilding the whole lid, so these are typically the least expensive and often quick to turn around once the right panel is on hand. Touchscreen Windows laptops are a step up in cost because the glass and digitizer are bonded to the panel.
MacBook screens: bonded and more involved
MacBook displays are thin, laminated units where the panel is bonded into the lid assembly. That makes for a beautiful screen but a more involved repair, and the part itself costs more than a typical Windows panel. The upside is that a MacBook is well worth keeping, so a screen repair still beats replacing the machine by a wide margin. We confirm the exact model and what your repair needs before quoting.
Surface devices: careful glass work
Microsoft Surface screens — the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines — are fused glass-and-display units sealed with strong adhesive. A cracked Surface screen (a common search for a reason) is repairable, but it is delicate work: the glass has to be removed cleanly without damaging the display or the frame, and resealed properly afterward. Because of that, Surface repairs take more care and time than a bolt-in Windows panel.
What the repair involves and what it costs
For modular panels we open the lid, disconnect the old panel, fit the new one, and test brightness, color, and any touch function before reassembly. For bonded MacBook and Surface displays we work slowly to separate and reseal the assembly. Cost comes down to the device, whether it is a plain panel or a laminated touch unit, and screen size — which is why we diagnose first and give you a price before any paid work. Simple panel swaps can be same-day; bonded displays and parts ordered for a specific model take longer. Our computer and laptop repair service covers all three device types, and a free check-in gets you an exact quote.
Can you use the laptop with a cracked screen in the meantime?
Sometimes, but be careful. Cracks spread with every open-and-close, pressure on a damaged panel can push it from cracked to black, and sharp glass edges are a hazard. If the picture is still good you can plug into an external monitor and keep working until the repair — which is also a handy test, since a clean picture on the external screen confirms the laptop itself is fine and only the built-in display needs work.
Repair or replace?
If the laptop still runs well and meets your needs, a screen repair is the clear value — you keep the machine, your files, and your setup. Replacement only wins when the laptop is very old, no longer updated, or has other failing parts stacking up. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your device is on.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to repair a cracked screen or buy a new laptop? Repair, in almost every case — a replacement screen is a fraction of the cost of a comparable new machine.
My laptop screen is cracked but the picture is fine — do I still need the LCD replaced? If it is only the outer glass on a non-touch laptop, sometimes not. If cracks reach the panel or you see lines or dark spots, the LCD needs replacing. We check which it is.
Do you repair MacBook and Surface screens, not just Windows laptops? Yes — all three. Each is built differently, so we quote based on your exact model.
Will a screen repair erase my files? No. Replacing the display does not touch your storage.
