Buying a Refurbished iPhone in Dallas: What to Check First

Buying Guide · Oct 10, 2026 · Family Wireless Cell Phone Repair

Short answer: a good refurbished iPhone can be a smart buy — you get a capable phone for far less than new — but only if you check a few things first. Battery health, carrier lock, a clean IMEI, and an honest condition grade are what separate a great deal from a headache. Use this checklist before you hand over any money.

"Refurbished" vs "used" vs "Apple Certified Refurbished"

These terms are not interchangeable, and the difference matters. A used phone is sold as-is. A refurbished or renewed phone has been tested, cleaned, and had faulty parts replaced by an independent shop or reseller. Apple Certified Refurbished is a specific program run by Apple, with Apple's own parts, a one-year Apple warranty, and a new battery and outer shell — and only Apple can call a phone that. An independently renewed iPhone can be excellent value, but it is not the same thing as Apple Certified Refurbished, so be wary of any listing that blurs the two.

Check the battery health

Battery is the first thing to look at, because it is the part that wears. On the phone, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging, and read Maximum Capacity. A genuinely good refurb should be well up in the 80s or higher, or have a brand-new battery fitted. Anything in the low 80s or below means you will be shopping for a battery replacement sooner rather than later — factor that into the price.

Confirm it is unlocked (or locked to the carrier you want)

A carrier-locked phone only works on one network until it is unlocked. Ask whether the phone is unlocked, and if you are moving networks, confirm it supports the bands your carrier uses. If it is locked and still owes a balance, it cannot be unlocked — which is also a sign the seller may not fully own it. Our guide on how to unlock a phone for any carrier explains eligibility in full.

Check the IMEI before you pay

This is the step people skip and regret. Dial *#06# to pull up the IMEI, and make sure it is clean — not reported lost, stolen, or blocklisted, and not tied to an unpaid installment plan. A blocklisted IMEI means the phone can be cut off from networks at any time, no matter how good it looks. Also confirm the seller's Apple ID and any activation lock have been removed; a phone still linked to someone else's iCloud account cannot be set up as yours and is effectively a brick.

Understand the condition grade

Reputable sellers grade cosmetic condition — often something like excellent, good, or fair — to describe scratches and wear on the glass and frame. Grading is about looks, not function, so a "fair" phone can work perfectly and save you money if you do not mind a few marks. What matters is that the grade is honest and the functional testing is separate from it. Ask what was tested.

Test the essentials in person

Before you commit, run through the basics: the screen for dead spots or discoloration and touch across the whole surface, both cameras front and back, the speakers and microphone on a quick call, Wi-Fi and cellular, Face ID or Touch ID, and that it charges — ideally on both cable and a wireless pad. Five minutes of checking saves a lot of trouble later. If the back glass is cracked, remember that can affect cameras and wireless charging, as we cover in is cracked back glass worth fixing.

Ask about returns and support

Buy from someone who stands behind the phone. Ask what happens if something turns up wrong in the first week or two, and whether there is any coverage on the device. A local shop you can walk back into is worth more than a faceless online listing when you need a question answered — and it means repairs and accessories are handled in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What battery health should a refurbished iPhone have? Ideally mid-80s percent or higher, or a newly fitted battery. Lower than that and you should budget for a replacement.

How do I know a used iPhone is not stolen? Check the IMEI is clean with *#06#, and confirm the previous owner removed their Apple ID and activation lock before you buy.

Is an independently refurbished iPhone as good as Apple Certified Refurbished? It can be great value, but it is not the same program. Only Apple can label a phone Apple Certified Refurbished. Judge an independent refurb on battery health, testing, condition, and return policy.

Can you check a phone I already bought? Yes — bring it in and we will test the battery, IMEI status, and core functions and tell you where it stands.
