What to Do After Water Damage

Water · Oct 10, 2026 · Family Wireless Cell Phone Repair

Short answer: switch the phone off now, do not charge it, skip the rice, and get it to a repair shop the same day if you can. Speed matters because corrosion starts as soon as liquid sits on the circuit board. Clean water is the best case. Salt water, pool water, soda, and coffee are worse. A phone that is dealt with quickly can often be saved, but not always, and we will tell you honestly which case yours is.

The first five minutes

Power the phone off straight away. If it is already off, leave it off. Take off the case, remove the SIM tray, and wipe the outside with a dry, soft cloth. Do not plug in a charger, and do not keep pressing buttons to see if it still works. Powering up a wet board is how a small, fixable short turns into a dead chip.

What not to do

Do not put the phone in rice. Rice does not pull moisture out from inside a sealed phone, and the dust and starch it leaves behind can end up in the ports and make cleaning harder. Do not use a hair dryer or any heat, and do not blow compressed air into the openings, because that can push liquid deeper into the phone. And do not wait a day or two before turning it on to test it. The hours you spend waiting are the hours corrosion spends working.

Why the same day matters

Water on its own does not always kill a phone. The damage comes from what it leaves behind. As liquid dries on the board, minerals and salts stay on the metal, and with a little power or moisture they corrode copper traces and solder joints. The longer that sits, the more of the board it reaches. Getting the phone opened and the battery disconnected quickly is what gives it the best chance.

What water damage repair involves

At our Dallas shop we open the phone, disconnect the battery, and inspect the board for liquid trails and corrosion. We then clean the board carefully and test the parts that matter: power, display, charging, speakers, microphones, and cameras. If a part has failed, such as the battery, charging port, or screen, we replace it. Our water damage phone repair service covers this, and if recovery is not realistic we tell you before any paid work starts. If you need your photos, say so when you bring it in so we handle the phone with data in mind.

Water resistant does not mean waterproof

Water resistance ratings come from lab tests with fresh water in controlled conditions. Seals wear with age and can be weakened by drops, and manufacturer warranties generally do not cover liquid damage. A phone that survived a dunk once can still fail later if water got past a seal, so treat any exposure seriously.

Signs of water damage that show up later

Sometimes a phone seems fine and then problems appear days later. A muffled or crackling speaker can be fixed through speaker and earpiece repair. A phone that stops charging, or shows a warning about liquid in the connector, is covered in our guide on why a phone will not charge. Other warning signs include a battery that drains fast, flickering or spotted screens, and foggy camera lenses. If you notice any of these after a spill, bring the phone in sooner rather than later.

Salt water, soda, and coffee

Tell us what the liquid was. Sugary, salty, or acidic liquids leave residue that corrodes faster and is harder to clean than plain water, so those phones are more urgent. The same goes for pool water.

Laptops and tablets follow the same rules

If you spill something on a laptop or tablet, power it down, unplug it, and do not turn it back on to check. Our guide on what to do when a laptop will not turn on and our iPad and tablet guide cover those devices.

Frequently asked questions

Can a phone that will not turn on after water damage be saved? Often yes, if it is cleaned quickly. We inspect it first and tell you what is realistic before any paid work.

How long should I wait before turning it on? Do not wait and test it. Leave it off and bring it in, because powering a wet phone is the most common way to make the damage worse.

Will I lose my photos? We handle water-damaged phones with your data in mind, but we cannot promise recovery in every case, which is why a recent backup always helps.

Is water damage covered by the manufacturer warranty? Usually not. Liquid damage is generally excluded, so a local repair is often the practical route.
